Phoebe, A Sister In Jesus Christ

Romans 16:1 “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea.”

Phoebe is briefly mentioned here by Paul in Romans, but from this short introduction we can learn a great deal about her Christian character which is a valuable example to us as women.
First she is described as a “servant” of the church which is at Cenchrea, which is a neighboring port city of Corinth.  A “servant,” in acts of charity and hospitality.  As a woman servant she would have been responsible for caring for sick believers, the poor and strangers.  Phoebe would also have tended to those in prison and been an instructor of women and children. Titus 2:3-5 and I Timothy 3:11.  This fits very well with Paul’s description of her as being “a helper of many and of myself as well.”  Apparently, she was a true friend of Paul’s and showed much kindness to him as well as to many others.  “True religion, rightly received, never made any man uncivil.  Courtesy and Christianity agree well together.” Matthew Henry
Paul also called Phoebe a “sister,” meaning a sister in the faith—a fellow believer in Jesus Christ.  As a believer she was obedient to God’s commands for a woman.  She was “dignified, not a malicious gossip, temperate, faithful in all things.”  I Timothy 3:11  All these qualities are evident as Phoebe had been given a great responsibility when Paul asked her to deliver his “Letter to the Romans” to the church in Rome, and commends her to that church, asking them to “help her in whatever matter she may have need of you.”  Romans 16:2.
From her description she was perhaps either a single woman, a widow, a woman whose children were grown or perhaps a woman who never had children.  Whatever her situation, she certainly was not an idle woman, but one who took her Christian responsibility seriously; one who had a willing attitude to serve the Lord and yielded herself to every opportunity to do so. How we admire her heart to be useful in God’s service with an eager caring obedient spirit.

A sweet thought for a Sunday. “True religion, rightly received, never made any man uncivil. Courtesy and Christianity agree well together.” (Matthew Henry on Rom 16:1) Thanks for sharing, Mrs. Gail!
