Eyes On The Lord

Psalm 25:15a  “My eyes are continually toward the Lord,”

One Saturday morning my husband was driving our van to a mechanic shop.  The place was out in the country about  half an hour drive from our home.  The highway was a heavily traveled two-lane blacktop road.  I was following behind in another vehicle since we were leaving the van at the repair shop.  All was well until it began to rain.
It was just a normal shower at first, but suddenly it began coming down in “sheets” and the windshield wipers were of little use even though they were working furiously.  The way in front of me was “white” with rain and I couldn’t see the road.  I was nervous but remained calm as I watched the two small red taillights on the back of the van my husband was driving in front of me.  As long as I could see them, I felt safe.
I aligned myself with them, making sure I was not too far to the left or to the right.  I spaced my distance behind the lights, slowing and speeding up as they did.  I needed no other guide but those small red beams glowing through the white haze.  Thankfully we drove out of the rain within a short time, but the incident left a memorable impression on me.  I immediately began to consider the event and then I asked myself the question, “Is not this exactly the way in which I am to consider my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?”
Searching the Scriptures, I quickly found a Bible verse in John 8:12, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”  The Lord plainly and distinctly tells us that He is our Light.  This world is surrounded with the darkness of sin, but there’s no need to worry, for the Lord Jesus Christ is our Light.
How are we to follow this Light?  Proverbs 4:25 and 27a gives us the instructions:  “Let your eyes look directly ahead and let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you.  Do not turn to the right nor to the left.”   The instructions are specific.  There is no “gray area,”  no room for uncertain questions: our eyes are to look “directly” on the Lord Jesus Christ and “straight” to Him, not to the right or to the left. There are no options to glance off to the side to see if that might be helpful.  The world has nothing to offer us except uncertain, wearisome, weak advice.  But our path can be a well-lighted path, a sure path, and a confident path, when our whole eye is “continually toward the Lord.”
