Building Our Homes–The Foundation

Proverbs 14:1  “A wise woman buildeth her home, a foolish one teareth it down.”

Proverbs 23:3-4  “By wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established; And by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”

The joy of a home and family is one of the greatest joys in the world, so today I want to think about building our homes.  Godly, happy, peaceful, secure homes don’t just happen.  They require diligent work, planning, organization, much prayer, self sacrifice, a lot of dedication and a firm foundation.  Proverbs 31:27 says, “She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.”
I am married to a (now retired) commercial construction superintendent.   When my husband would receive the plans for a new job, many times he would take me out to the jobsite before the work ever began.  There I could see the large piece of flat land where the rendering on the architects drawings would one day become a beautiful building.  A few weeks later this same land would be full of trenches and holes as the foundation was being prepared.  There were many tasks that needed to be done underground and the superintendent was there to see that each task was done in an orderly manner.  First, piling was driven for support, then wood forms would be set to make the perimeter of the concrete slab, then plumbers would install the underground pipes.  Next the ground was treated for termites and visqueen was spread.  On top of that the reinforcing steel was placed to give the concrete added strength.  Electricians were then called in to install conduit for the necessary underground electrical needs.  Finally the concrete was poured and a beautiful smooth slab was all that could be seen.  Most of the general public does not know how much work goes on underground as a building is being built, but the main support and stability of the building depends on this foundation being strong and firm.
And so, too, the foundation of our homes must be firm and strong to be stable and to be secure and to weather the storms of life.  Who is this Foundation?  Who is this Rock?  Jesus Christ, of course !!  In order to build our homes properly and in an orderly manner, and to keep them from being torn down, we must know Him as our Lord and Savior.   For it is through the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and leading us from the Word of God that we are able to maintain a strong home.  God’s Word gives us wonderful examples of women who placed their faith and trust in God to build their homes:
1. Sarah, Abraham’s wife—Hebrews 11:11 “By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive, beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.”
2. Jochebed, Moses mother—Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents.”
3. Ruth, Obed’s mother (He was the grandfather of David) —Ruth 1:16 “Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.”
4. Hannah, Samuel’s mother—I Samuel 2:1 “My heart rejoices in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord.”
5. Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ—Luke 1:46 “My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”
Let us spend some time studying these women and strive to follow their example as we build our homes.
