Upheld By God’s Hand

Psalm 37:23-24 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.  Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.”

God’s Word says, “Narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, Matthew 7:14b  But even after we’re saved the way is still narrow.  How do we know this?  Notice how easily our feet have a tendency to slip: the first thing you know and we’re caught up in some worldly activity, or soon our patience runs out and we’re angry again, or then we become absorbed in self and almost fall into depression, or slackness takes over and our praying and Bible reading fall by the wayside.
To step carefully in our own strength requires looking down, then fear takes over for we see how narrow the path is and the danger of falling off.  The Bible says, “Fear hath torments”  I John 4:18  and how well we know that from experience.  Fear generally brings about anger and anger weakens us physically, spiritually and emotionally.  Jesus Christ said “Fear not,” many times.  And if Jesus Christ, the Creator of the universe, the One with all power, said “Fear not,” then I must go forth each day without fear.
Let’s look at those Scriptures that will give us the strength that we need.  Again, we realize our direction for looking must be UP—UP toward our Heavenly Father.  Our first cry is the cry of the Psalmist in Psalm 17:5, “Hold up my goings in Thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.”  No true child of God wants his foot to slip and so we ask the Lord to keep our footsteps on His path.  But, although our souls are kept by the power of God, daily our sinful flesh, in thought, word and deed, manifests itself and the way becomes slippery.  Then our cry is “When I said, My foot slippeth; Thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.” Psalm 94:18. Oh, yes, the marvelous mercy of a loving Heavenly Father holds us up.
But when our feet give way completely, we are still held by the Omnipotent Hand of God.  How?  Again the Psalmist tells us, “Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.”  Psalm 18:36  Just picture a round stepping stone.  Then picture it growing and enlarging so that no matter how wobbly and wavering your steps become, the stone becomes large enough so that you could never fall off the edge.
Oh, the mercy of a Gracious Lord that loved us enough to die for us and then loves us enough to keep us to the end.  “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.”  II Corinthians 9:15

I know what it is to slip. I slipped on the ice, was knocked out, and broke my wrist. I was abused as a teenager… Both so unexpected. I know God’s grace and love and His sustaining power. Thanks for this reminder of how good He is.
