Lois and Eunice, Timothy’s Grandmother and Mother

Paul wrote to Timothy in II Timothy 1:5 “For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and I am sure that it is in you as well.”

Oh, how I love to read and study mothers, in the Bible, and in this case grandmothers, too, which I joyfully am also.  We have here the continuity of “sincere faith” passed down from grandmother to mother to son, and what a wonderful son this brought forth.
Paul wrote to Timothy in I Timothy 3:15, “And that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
Here we see that Lois and Eunice had taught Timothy the Scriptures, the Bible, the Word of God.  When?  Certainly not after he was grown, but “from childhood.”  He grew up hearing, reading, talking about and obeying the Word of God.  Early training secures lifelong habits.
Following the instruction of God’s Word, Timothy was not only taught and instructed in God’s Word, but disciplined.

Proverbs 29:15 “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.”

Proverbs 13:24 “He who withholds his correction hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.”

Teaching God’s Word and enforcing it with loving discipline consistently throughout a child’s upbringing results in the fulfillment of this wonderful promise:  “Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; He will also delight your soul.” Proverbs 29:17  I have found this promise to be true in my life!

Obeying God’s Word “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6, Lois and Eunice were rewarded with a grandson/son who followed the Lord and brought them much joy.  Let us faithfully and eagerly follow their examples that our children and grandchildren will follow the Lord also.
